Whose in Your Corner?

Updated: Oct 17, 2019

Welcome to Grow People Mentoring and Consulting! Thanks for checking us out!

The launch of this site and blog is the culmination of about 10 years worth of investing into the lives of others and imagining a world where this could be the norm for everybody everyday. So welcome to our first blog post....we hope to see you again.

Any good mentor asks good questions so my blog’s will probably be more full of questions than answers sometimes but hopefully the questions will help you think.

So this months question is Who is in Your Corner?

As I ask that question myself a boxing ring comes to mind and the coach supporting and cheering the boxer on as they engage in the profession they have trained long and hard for. Similarly, in our day to day lives we need people in our corner. People who can listen, cheer us on, help us recognise our blind spots, guide or point us to others who can help us develop skills and dust off our knees and wipe our brow when the going gets tough and cheer us back out into the ring. This is mentoring.

As I reflect on the many great mentors who I have been blessed with in life starting with my wonderful parents, grandparents and other significant influences, one face in particular comes to mind - David Renton. David Renton was my high school principal. In the teen season of life when we are figuring out who we are, David Renton was key in mentoring me, particularly in my leadership and fanning into flame confidence in this area. It was only recently when I found out he has passed away that I reflected on the significance of his impact on my life and no doubt the lives of many other students. A string of faces and influences come to mind that came after him right to the present day.

Have you ever stopped to think about who is mentoring you? We are being mentored by influences around us everyday whether we know it or not. Choosing to engage in intentional mentoring is saying yes to growth, encouragement, vulnerability and challenge.

What life giving, intentional influences do you have in your life at the moment?

Can I encourage you today to think about engaging in an intentional mentoring relationship personally? Who might that person be?

Who is, or could be, in your corner listening and championing you on for this next season of your journey?

Talk soon,

Kate
